Kick off 2019 with our first annual Media Crystal Ball program with a panel of top Tampa Bay journalists as they peer into the new year to discuss local and national issues they think will be hot -- or not. Tampa Bay Times Business Writer Susan Taylor Martin, Tampa Bay Business Journal Editor-in-Chief Alexis Muellner and Business Observer Managing Editor Mark Gordon will share their take on the trends, stories and market dynamics that could impact our work as PR and communications professionals. Meet our speakers:

Susan Taylor Martin
Business Writer
Tampa Bay Times

Susan Taylor Martin covers real estate and development for the Tampa Bay Times. Immediately before, that she was an investigative reporter for the Times. She spent 12 years as the paper's foreign correspondent, covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and many other international issues, and previously served as the Times' executive business editor, city editor and deputy managing editor. A native of New York City, she graduated from Duke University and worked at the Associated Press and Orlando Sentinel before joining the Times.

Alexis Muellner
Tampa Bay Business Journal

Alexis Muellner (“Milner”) is responsible for the news operation of the digital and print editions of the Tampa Bay Business Journal.  He has nearly 21 years with American City Business Journals, the TBBJ parent company. He was named TBBJ editor-in-chief back in 2004. Alexis earned a master's degree in print journalism from the University of Miami in 1993 and a BA from Hampshire College. His roots are in public radio where credits include National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” “Weekend Edition,” “Crossroads,” and “Living on Earth.” He was an adjunct professor at Florida International University in Miami, where he taught the business and ethics of journalism, and broadcast writing and reporting. He was winner of the prestigious Livingston Award for Young Journalists for his public radio series on the role of radio in Vietnam during the war. His print journalism credits include the Miami Herald, Florida Trend, the New York Times, the Miami Daily Business Review, Quill and the Sports Business Journal. He has twice been the recipient of the national ACBJ Eagle Award, his company’s highest honor, for excellence in news.

For TV, Muellner has been a regular commentator for Bay News 9. He’s on the boards of the Tampa Bay Community Network and Speak Up, a Tampa nonprofit that provides video production services, training and production crews for individuals and non-profits; and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. He lives in Pasco County with his wife Joni, and in downtime, pursues his creative goals through a robust Instagram feed.

Mark Gordon
Managing Editor
Business Observer

Mark Gordon is the Managing Editor of the Business Observer, where he’s worked since 2005. He has written about companies, development, entrepreneurs and how government intersects with business, among other topics. He currently oversees the paper’s coverage from Tampa to Naples, in print and online, overseeing a staff of reporters and interns, in addition to writing stories. Prior to the Business Observer, Mark worked for daily newspapers in upstate New York, suburban Philadelphia and Jacksonville. He lives in east Manatee County with his wife, Elyse, and their 10-year-old son, Aaron. The Business Observer is part of the Observer Media Group, which publishes more than 10 weekly newspapers across Florida and was founded in 1995. Started in 1997, the Business publishes in print each Friday, with a daily email newsletter.  


Justin Herndon 
Allstate National Media Relations Team

Justin works remotely from Tampa as the leader of a national, proactive storytelling team for Allstate Insurance. In addition to his regular duties handling external communication countrywide, Justin has also deployed wherever major catastrophes hit to handle media relations on-the-ground, including six hurricanes, two wildfires and a major tornado over the past decade.

Prior to corporate communications, Justin helped lead national publicity campaigns including a media blitz for former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. And before PR, he was an on-air TV news reporter in Florida, Missouri and Louisiana, where his coverage included national elections, a Super Bowl and Hurricane Katrina. He has earned multiple TV news and PR honors, including local PRSA PRestige awards.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received by noon on Friday, Jan. 18, will be accepted without penalty. Regarding cancellations made after that date, registrations paid in advance will not be refunded, and those who registered but did not pay will be invoiced the full registration amount.
